Why Midrand owners choose D2 Customs
Midrand's proximity to the studio makes it one of our easiest logistical routes and one of the most demanding on paint. The N1 corridor through Allandale, Grand Central and Buccleuch is a brake-dust and stone-chip generator; construction across Waterfall City puts fine cement dust into the air; and the wide-open Highveld altitude means UV load is roughly 15% higher than at coastal elevations. Cars from Waterfall, Kyalami and Blue Hills need real protection, not a monthly hand wash. Every job starts with paint-depth readings and a written paint correction scope, then a five- or ten-year ceramic coating or a bundled protection package.
Construction dust: the Waterfall-specific problem
Waterfall City has been a live building site for the better part of a decade, and it shows up in the paint. Cement and plaster dust is alkaline and hygroscopic — it draws moisture, sets on a warm panel and etches into clear coat in a way ordinary road grime never does. We regularly take delivery of six-month-old cars from Waterfall residences with a faint grey haze across the roof and bonnet that the owner assumed was dull paint.
It is not dull paint; it is bonded deposit. The fix is a full chemical decontamination followed by correction, and the prevention is a coating slick enough that the dust rinses off before it can key into the surface. Cars parked in an open bay near active construction get a shorter maintenance interval than the same car garaged in Carlswald.

Track-driven weekend car with clean paint but heavy stone-chip damage across the front clip from Zwartkops and Red Star sessions. Multi-stage correction to remove buffer swirls from a previous non-specialist detail, XPEL Ultimate Plus full-front plus rockers, and a ten-year Innova ceramic over the film and the rest. Booked for annual inspection ahead of each Kyalami 9-hour.
Range Rover Sport SVR — Waterfall Estate
New car, delivered with the usual dealer wash marring plus fine cement dust already embedded from the construction still running near the residence. Full decontamination wash with iron remover, single-stage correction, ten-year ceramic and a Nanoshade window tint refresh. Now on a quarterly maintenance schedule.
Collection & drop-off
Estate access, boom gates and the R21 run
Waterfall, Kyalami Estate, Blue Hills and Steyn City all run visitor pre-authorisation, and each one wants slightly different paperwork. We handle it the same way every time: transporter registration, driver name and ID sent to the estate the day before, loaded at the driveway rather than at a communal gate so the car never sits in a public bay. No open trailers into Waterfall — the estate's own rules aside, the construction dust on the internal roads is exactly what we are trying to keep off fresh paint.
Self-drive is easy from Midrand. The R21 south from Allandale to Terenure runs against peak flow in the morning, so a 07:30 drop-off is realistic even from Kyalami. Owners of collector and track cars usually still take the enclosed unit — low front splitters and estate speed humps are a bad combination.

- Waterfall requires visitor pre-authorisation at least 24 hours before pickup. We send the driver's ID, vehicle reg and enclosed transporter details to the estate manager — you approve at the resident portal. Same process for Kyalami Estate, Blue Hills and Steyn City on the border.
- How bad is N1 fallout on a Midrand daily driver?
- The N1 between Buccleuch and Allandale is one of the most fallout-heavy stretches in Gauteng. Brake-dust iron particles from truck traffic settle on horizontals within days and oxidise into clear coat inside weeks. A ceramic coating plus an iron-remover wash schedule is the only way to keep paint safe long-term.
