What a ceramic coating actually does
A ceramic coating is a liquid nano-ceramic (typically SiO2 or a Si-Si02 hybrid) that cross-links onto the clear coat and cures into a hard, semi-permanent layer roughly 2–3 microns thick. Once cured it becomes the surface the world touches instead of your paint — so UV, tree sap, bird lime, brake dust, iron fallout and mineral water spots meet the coating first. That protection is the practical value: fewer etchings, easier washing, no waxing, and a hydrophobic finish that sheets water off at highway speed. The optical bonus — the wet, glassy depth that ceramic coatings are famous for — is real but secondary to the durability.
For it to work, the paint underneath has to be right. That means a proper decontamination, an IPA panel wipe, and a single- or multi-stage paint correction before a single drop of coating goes on. A coating installed over swirls just locks the swirls in for a decade. As certified ceramic coating specialists we install manufacturer-approved Innova ceramic systems (3, 5 and 10-year), cure them in a climate-controlled bay, and issue a warranty registered to the vehicle's chassis number.
Innova ceramic coating for Sandton, Bryanston and Hyde Park dailies
The clients who get the most out of a 10-year Innova ceramic coating are daily-driven luxury cars in Sandton, Bryanston, Hyde Park and Midrand — Cayenne, DBX, Urus, Range Rover, G-Class, Panamera and the 992 daily 911s. These cars accumulate wash marring fast and benefit from a slick, self-cleaning surface. Weekend cars and collector Ferraris usually pair a 10-year ceramic with full-front PPF so the front end is stone-chip safe and the rest of the car stays glass-flat under a Bespoke or PTS finish.

- How long does a ceramic coating actually last in Johannesburg conditions?
- Our systems are rated 3, 5 or 10 years. In Highveld conditions — hard sun, dust storms and summer thunderstorms — a properly maintained 10-year coating on a garaged luxury car realistically holds 6–8 years of active hydrophobics before it needs a top-up. Cars parked outside in Sandton, Midrand or Kempton Park see slightly shorter life.
- Do I need paint correction before the coating?
- Yes, in almost every case. A ceramic coating is optically clear — it locks in whatever swirls, holograms and etching are already in the paint. We always run a [paint correction](/services/paint-correction-johannesburg) stage first so the coating is applied over a true, level clear coat.
- Ceramic coating vs PPF — which do I actually need?
- They solve different problems. Ceramic coating is chemical protection (UV, contaminants, easier washing, deep gloss). [PPF](/services/paint-protection-film-johannesburg) is physical protection (stone chips, road rash, scratches). Most of our Ferrari, Porsche GT and Rolls-Royce clients run PPF on the front third of the car and a 10-year ceramic over everything else.
- How much does ceramic coating cost in Johannesburg?
- Ceramic coating packages run from R7,000 to R10,000 for most luxury cars, including the required prep and single-stage correction. Multi-stage correction, wheel-face coating and glass coating are quoted on top after inspection.
- How do I wash a ceramic-coated car so I don't ruin it?
- Two-bucket contact wash every 2–3 weeks with a pH-neutral shampoo, and no petrol-station automatic washes — those are the fastest way to swirl a coated finish. We include a written aftercare protocol and an annual inspection at our studio.
