Glass Coating · Johannesburg

Glass Coating Johannesburg.

A hydrophobic ceramic coating for the windscreen and side glass — water beads off at speed, night-time glare from wet roads drops, and the wipers get an easier life. Installed alongside our paint coating jobs or as a standalone service at the Kempton Park studio.

Why a glass coating matters in Johannesburg specifically

Johannesburg drivers deal with two glass problems that most other cities do not have to worry about at the same intensity. First, Highveld thunderstorms — the kind that arrive in fifteen minutes on a summer afternoon and dump enough water on the M1 or N1 to turn the road into a mirror. Second, hard borehole and municipal water that leaves mineral spots on the windscreen the moment the car is washed or rained on. A hydrophobic glass coating fixes both. Water beads up and rolls off above about 60 km/h, so you can genuinely drive through a Highveld storm with the wipers off, and the mineral spots stop bonding to the silica because the surface is now sealed.

The safety benefit is the one owners feel first. Night driving through wet Sandton or the R21 after a storm is where an uncoated windscreen falls apart — a thin film of water across the glass diffuses the LED headlights of oncoming traffic into a sheet of glare. Break that film and the glare drops immediately. That is the reason glass coating almost always goes on the same day we install a ceramic coating on the paint.

What we actually do to the glass

Every glass coating install starts with a decontamination and mechanical polish of the windscreen and side glass with cerium-oxide compound. That removes bonded water spots, mineral deposits and any light wiper etching that would otherwise be sealed under the coating. Once the glass is cleaned and IPA-wiped we apply the ceramic coating in two crossed layers, let it flash off, and buff the residue clear. The car dwells in the studio until the coating cures. Fresh wiper blades are strongly recommended at the same time — old rubber wipers are the number one thing that shortens a glass coating's life. Pair with our paint ceramic or a full protection package.

Frequently asked questions

What does a glass coating actually do?
It bonds a hydrophobic ceramic layer to the windscreen and side glass. Above roughly 60 km/h the water beads off on its own — most Johannesburg drivers switch their wipers off in a normal summer thunderstorm. At night the glare from oncoming headlights through wet glass drops noticeably because the water film is broken.
How long does the glass coating last?
Between 12 and 24 months on the windscreen depending on wiper use — the wipers are the main thing that wears a glass coating out. Side windows and rear glass typically hold hydrophobics longer than the windscreen.
Is it worth doing if my car already has a ceramic coating on the paint?
Yes. A [paint ceramic coating](/services/ceramic-coating-johannesburg) does nothing for the windscreen. Glass coating is a separate chemistry designed for silica surfaces and is almost always installed alongside a paint coating so the whole car sheds water the same way.
Do you polish the glass first?
Yes. A glass polish removes water spots, mineral deposits and light wiper marks — otherwise the coating just locks those defects in. On older Highveld cars this step alone dramatically improves the clarity at night.
How much does glass coating cost in Johannesburg?
Glass coating is priced from R2,000 for a standard car including a glass polish. Larger SUVs and vehicles that need panoramic roofs coated are quoted after inspection.
